Wine Preservation System Reviews
1. Coravin Timeless Three Plus Wine Preservation System
- Type (how it works): Argon Gas + Aerator
- Effectiveness: 4.8/5.0
- Bottle Capacity: Unlimited
- Ease of Use: 4.0/5.0
However, I was so distraught after one of my favorite Chardonnays went bad after a few days of opening it that I bought one of the Coravin Timeless Three Plus Wine Preservation Systems.
Thanks to this one, I can now savor a single glass and end up drinking from that same bottle a month or two later with that same rich flavor. It operates with 100% food-grade argon gas which is high-quality, keeping the wine left in the bottle “blanketed” to protect it from oxidation.
The preserver works with Coravin capsules, which can preserve 5 or so bottles (at 750ml) before the capsule needs a change. This is important to note, as while they are very effective, the capsules can get a bit expensive – keep that in mind for your budget.
It’s also quite easy to use – however, I didn’t give it a 5 out of 5 ease of use rating as you do have to be careful when changing the capsule to completely remove it from the bottle first to avoid accidentally pushing air into the bottle.
It can also take a little bit of practice to perfect, but I would say it’s quite intuitive after the first couple of times using it. My advice? Order a couple of extra gas cylinders so you already have them on hand just in case you receive unexpected company!
It’s perfect if you enjoy finer wines and/or like to compare and taste different bottles without worrying about them being wasted.
2. Dash Serve & Preserve Wine Set
- Type (how it works): Vacuum Seal
- Effectiveness: 4.5/5.0
- Bottle Capacity: 2 (can buy additional caps)
- Ease of Use: 5.0/5.0
Coming in Stainless Steel Rose Gold, Aqua, or Graphite color schemes, it’s a beautiful addition to any bar or kitchen, and is one of the easiest and most intuitive to use. It was the first wine preserver I’ve used that I didn’t even had to read the instructions with before, taking just 8 or so seconds after pressing the button.
It’s double-sided so it opens bottles on the bottom and the top has a vacuum sealer – super convenient and all-in-one so it doesn’t take up much space.
With 2 reusable caps included, I’ve found it can open and seal any size of wine bottle. It’s completely rechargeable, charges fast, and on a single charge it can open up to an impressive 30 bottles.
The charging dock keeps everything compact, and nice and organized, which is essential for me as I’m the kind of person who always ends up losing little accessories. It’s a beautiful addition to my bar cart and has completely changed the way I select and drink my best wines.
While I don’t mind using a wine key, the corkscrew is ultra convenient as it will remove the cork for you effortlessly, in a few seconds.
3. Vacu Vin Wine Saver Pump Stainless Steel with Vacuum Wine Stopper
- Type (how it works): Vacuum Seal
- Effectiveness: 4.7/5.0
- Bottle Capacity: 7 bottles
- Ease of Use: 5.0/5.0
In fact, they invented the vacuum pump wine preservation system and have been known as a high-quality option since the beginning. With that being said, you can probably imagine why I had to include the Vacu Vin Wine Saver Pump Stainless Steel with Vacuum Wine Stopper in this guide.
In my opinion, it’s one of the sleekest, most sophisticated-looking wine preservers with its stainless steel finish and all-black caps. Made in the Netherlands, all of the components are comprised of high-quality materials that are made to last.
The vacuum system removes the air inside the wine bottles to keep it from oxidizing, keeping it fresh and tasty for weeks at a time! You’ll also receive convenient, sleek wine pourers for a clean pour every time – no dripping or spilling while entertaining and serving guests!
I also appreciate that they included 7 wine stoppers, to help further keep things fresh and also offer a more uniform appearance to my wine collection.
Using it is easy, too: just place a stopper in the bottle, position the wine saver on top of the stopper, pumping a few times until you hear a “click”. That’s it!
4. Coravin Pivot Wine Preservation System
- Type (how it works): Argon Gas
- Effectiveness: 4.5/5.0
- Bottle Capacity: By the Glass
- Ease of Use: 4.5/5.0
This 5-piece kit comes with the effective pivot system, along with a single Argon gas capsule, 2 bottle stoppers, and a bottle sleeve.
If I’m honest, I would have liked them to have at least included one additional gas capsule as they can be a bit expensive, but they do still last a good amount of time. Each time you use the Coravin, you can expect your reds and whites to be fresh for up to a whopping 4 weeks, which is impressive!
I opened my first bottle a few weeks after preserving it, and it was smooth and very fresh-tasting! In fact, as crazy as it sounds, I’m going to say it may have had a slightly more interesting flavor than my just-opened bottle of the same wine!
Just make sure that you push the button to get rid of all oxygen in the bottle while it’s upright after you first place the Argon pump inside. It’s not required, but it’s more effective and clean if you give it a quick rinse after each use.
5. Levare Rechargeable Wine Saver Vacuum Pump Sealer
- Type (how it works): Vacuum Pump Sealer
- Effectiveness: 4.4/5.0
- Bottle Capacity: 1 bottle
- Ease of Use: 5.0/5.0
So, you want a high-quality, effective wine preserver but you don’t want to spend a lot of money. There aren’t a ton of super-affordable products out there that I would recommend, but I’d definitely suggest the Levare Rechargeable Wine Saver Vacuum Pump Sealer every time.
The simple black design isn’t made to be shown off, but it will fit in nicely with any bar or on any countertop with its small footprint. The vacuum pump sealer works very intuitively, and was one of the easiest in my opinion, to operate.
All you have to do is make sure it’s charged, press down, and the pump will automatically create a vacuum seal to keep your wine from oxidizing. The fact that you don’t even have to press a button is amazing, and perfect for users – even those who aren’t quite tech-savvy.
It comes with little convenient LED lights that light up when it’s still pumping, and even offers a date stamp so you know exactly when the bottle was sealed! The only potential “complaint” I have is that the pump is made of plastic, while some of the others on this guide are made with stainless steel.
It isn’t quite as durable in terms of build quality, but by no means is it flimsy or ineffective.
How to Choose the Best Wine Preservation System
Benefits of Using Wine Preservation Systems
I don’t even want to think about how many wonderful bottles of wine I’ve had to waste because I didn’t want to drink the entire bottle that same night.
Using a wine preservation system isn’t just going to keep your wine fresh for days or weeks on end – it’s going to make sure each glass maintains its original flavor profile, the way the makers intended it to be enjoyed.
For wine enthusiasts and collectors, alike, this means you’ll be able to taste a wider range of wines without worrying about wasting them. The flexibility is all about your schedule, your preferences, your terms.
There have been so many times where I’ve had guests over who wanted a wine that I wasn’t particularly a big fan of, so I’ve opened the bottle to pour them a glass, and it just ended up oxidizing days later.
Using a wine preservation system takes the worry of that away, letting all of us enjoy the flavors to their fullest! If you like going on picnic lunches or traveling a bit with wine, you also don’t have to fret about it going bad during your time away from the house.
Wine Preservation System FAQs:
Q: Do vacuum wine stoppers really work?
A: Yes, they do. However, the efficacy of the vacuum wine stopper will vary, depending on the brand and the quality of the system. Some of the cheaper, lower-quality products simply aren’t strong enough to create a real vacuum that removes the oxygen that spoils the wine.
Q: What is the best tool to preserve wine?
A: Wine Preservation systems using vacuums or gas capsules will either seal the bottom off and remove any remaining oxygen, or simply blanket the wine in a gas that keeps it from making contact with the oxygen that can cause it to spoil!
Q: What is the best gas for preserving wine?
A: As I mentioned in a couple of the reviews above, the best gas for preserving wine is easily Argon gas. This inert gas doesn’t react with other substances, which include wine, of course. It works to displace the oxygen sitting inside the bottle, blanketing it in a protective layer so the wine doesn’t make contact with the oxygen.
Q: Is a wine preservation system more effective than a cork?
A: Wine preservation systems and synthetic stoppers are more durable and can help seal them better than what replacing a cork would do. Bonus points for being more eco-friendly!
Q: How long does red wine last if it’s vacuum-sealed?
A: It depends on a few different factors, but from my personal experience and that of other trusted individuals, it can keep wine for all the way from a day to a few weeks!
