I actually had no idea it was Spanish missionaries who’d brought grapevines here from Europe, and the way they relayed the historical accounts to us was so interesting!
However, you’ll receive much more than just wine tastings here – they actually showed us essentially every step to making the wine! We saw how the grapes are selected, crushed, different blending techniques, all the way to the bottling!

What to Expect on the Tour
I am a huge fan of Napa and had visited many times before ever going to Sonoma. It really blew my mind the first time I visited Sonoma, seeing that it was nearly double in size, with so many grapes I could hardly wrap my head around it!
Due to its large size, it even has different microclimates, which produce not only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, but Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This tour offers a great exploration through both regions, with comfortable private transportation and a private guide/driver to lead the way. Thanks to a small-group setting that maxes out at just 6 participants, you don’t have to worry about not receiving personalized attention.
You and your group will be able to select between different wineries along the way, so it’s by no means a cookie-cutter experience that’s the same every time.
What Makes This Tour Great
As I mentioned up above, this is not your average tour that comes with a predetermined itinerary. You and your party get to provide input regarding your preferences and interests, with your guide there to cater to and customize the experience entirely.
Our guide was clearly an expert on the different regions and wineries, offering up plenty of fun facts and details that made me almost feel like an expert, myself!
With flexible timing, we never spent too little nor too much time at any stop. This was a big bonus for me, because one of my pet peeves is waiting around bored when we could move on to explore something else.
The Cabernet Sauvignons I tried in Napa were remarkable, with notes of blackberry and plum, and even chocolate from some oak aging! Sonoma had some incredible Cabernets with brighter red fruit flavors, as well as a crisp apple-y Pinot Noir.

Just like with most others, after going through various tastings at different wineries, you’ll make a stop for a nice lunch at the historic Downtown Sonoma Square before heading back to San Francisco.
What Makes This Tour Great
I’d recommend this tour to anyone who’s looking to stay on a tighter budget but still wants to see Sonoma and Napa with a professional guide who knows the area like the back of their hand.
Sure, you could drive out to the wineries on your own, but it will be a much different experience without the guide there to offer additional educational opportunities and show you those hidden gems you’d otherwise miss out on.
I found everyone I interacted with on this tour to be very friendly and willing to chat, but that could’ve just been the wine talking! In fact, our guide took us to a few different sites that I really loved outside of the wineries, making stops for photos at particularly notable/breathtaking places.
The lunch at Sonoma Square was also quite nice, as we got the chance to kick back and relax, reminiscing about everything we just experienced with the rest of our group and guide.
We even had the chance to do a bit of shopping at the little boutiques in the area, which made for some great souvenirs!

It’s also one of the best places in the country for food, as it’s filled with plenty of Michelin-starred restaurants, farm-to-table dishes paired with local wines, and much more.

This tour is wonderful because it’s one of the very few that are short enough that you can still experience this amazing region without spending the entire day out there.
It’s also a nice option if you’re not necessarily a wine connoisseur but would still like to experience Napa. I am obsessed with all things “wine” but I love this tour for letting us enjoy incredible food and wine with fun, knowledgeable people.
You’ll get to sit down at 3 restaurants for a course at each one, as well as a special visit to Chef Thomas Keller’s La Calenda and French Laundry for amazing tastings.
The gardens and kitchen were so cool to see, and sipping on one of the tastiest wines I’ve ever had with Kollar Chocolates in the beautiful greenery was simply magical. One of my favorite moments was trying Michael Chiarello’s signature dish, along with the great wine pairings.

- Where You Will Meet: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
- Tour Length: 7 hours

What to Expect on the Tour
This is one of the most charming wine-tasting tours I’ve been on in the US, and if you’re looking to explore Napa alone, few can compare. This tour is a bit shorter than most of the others, though it does not include a visit to Sonoma like the longer ones.
We visited 3 wineries which were all amazing, and I was grateful that our guide made the winery selections himself as there are hundreds and would’ve been nearly impossible for me to choose.
You’ll learn about Napa as you ride along in comfortable, air-conditioned transportation with a guide who offers an educational commentary on the history of the area as well as how it relates back to wine.
The wine I tried definitely deserved the awards they’d won, and I appreciated learning how these boutique wines operate – much different than the big ones. The picnic lunch served at one of the wineries was amazing, too.
What Makes This Tour Great
Much like some of the other tours on this guide, I enjoyed how everything was so well-planned and balanced. We would do a tasting in a cellar followed by a relaxing drive to the next winery or a lovely stroll through the vineyards, so there was never a moment for boredom.
The guide’s stories and educational commentary gave me a new appreciation for the area’s history and wine-making processes, too.
The views that I got to soak in of Napa Valley were so gorgeous, and I loved that we had a nice little picnic lunch with that as our background.
Of course, all food was nicely paired with some of the best local wines, which made things even better. If you are an information-lover or wine aficionado who wants to know it all, this is one of the best tours for you!

How would you like to just be picked up at your hotel by a wine expert who whisks you away to beautiful downtown Napa while trying some of the best food and wine the renowned region has to offer?
If that sounds like fun to you, you’re going to love the Napa’s Downtown Food and Wine Tour as much as I did! You get to choose between either a brunch or early dinner tour, so instead of visiting a nice restaurant, choose this adventure instead!
This isn’t just any food either – you’re going to be visiting Michelin-recommended restaurants and tasting salons all while learning about the drink and cuisine that lends Napa its good reputation.
With a small group setting, you’ll received personalized attention from your guide and be able to ask any question at all. The restaurants and wineries we visited were nice and varied, with something to be sampled and learned at each stop.
What Makes This Tour Great
One of the first things that made this tour worth it to me was that it included roundtrip transportation! None of us had to worry about finding a meetup point or booking separate transport, thanks to this convenient service.
Our guide was very conversational, teaching us about the history and interesting facts in a way that felt natural and not at all rehearsed.
I loved that we got to try some light and fresh Mediterranean dishes as well as some heavy, savory Italian dishes that went so wonderfully with the world-class wines.
If you select the brunch (highly recommend) option, you’ll get the chance to experience the female-owned Champagne tasting room that’s known as one of the best in the country.
Don’t forget to sample their cheeses and dried fruits, too! Don’t forget to pick up some fun souveirs at the Napa Valley Welcome Center!

You’ll visit some of the big dog wineries like Castello Di Amorosa and Domaine Chandon, which is quite a contrast between the more boutique wineries (unless you prefer them!).
What Makes This Tour Great
What’s so cool about this tour is that right after booking, our guide reached out to us to conduct a pre-travel consultation where we got to plan and personalize our upcoming tour!
It was a lot of fun getting to know our guide a bit, and they did a fantastic job offering insight and applying my feedback to create a personalized excursion that was even better than I could’ve imagined.
